As competition intensifies between the United States and China, a new centre of global strategy is emerging—not in the Pacific, but in the Indian Ocean. And India, by virtue of geography, is positioned at the heart of it.
India on the World’s Energy Highway
Most oil travelling from the Middle East to East Asia moves through the Indian Ocean. Tankers sailing from the Persian Gulf to China, Japan, and South Korea pass close to India’s coastline.
China and Japan rely heavily on the narrow Strait of Malacca. India does not. Its broad maritime frontage gives it flexibility and strategic depth.
A Vantage Point Over the Malacca Strait
India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands sit just west of the Malacca Strait—the main route for Chinese energy imports. From here, India can monitor nearly all shipping entering or leaving the strait.
This is why India established its only tri‑service command on these islands. Few nations have such a direct view of a rival’s supply line.
China’s “Malacca Dilemma”
China’s energy supply chain is long and exposed. Oil must travel thousands of kilometres through waters where India’s naval presence is expanding, and then into regions dominated by the US Navy.
This dual vulnerability—India in the Indian Ocean and the US in the Pacific—forms the core of China’s strategic anxiety.
India’s Navy Is Modernizing Fast
India is rapidly upgrading its maritime capabilities with:
- aircraft carriers
- nuclear-powered submarines
- long-range surveillance aircraft
- advanced anti-ship missiles
With INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, India can project power across the Indian Ocean in ways that were not possible a decade ago.
China’s Countermove: The “String of Pearls”
To reduce its vulnerability, China has invested in a network of ports across the Indian Ocean—Gwadar, Hambantota, Kyaukpyu—creating logistical footholds that could support naval operations.
India views this as a slow but deliberate attempt at strategic encirclement.
The Indian Ocean Returns to Centre Stage
For the first time since the British Empire, the Indian Ocean is becoming a primary arena of global competition. The strategic equation is clear:
- China depends on long, fragile sea routes
- India sits directly along those routes
- The United States dominates the wider naval system
