Reading Time: 2 minutes
Chandraghanta

On the third day of Navratri, devotees worship Maa Chandraghanta, the third manifestation of Adi Shakti. She is adorned with a half-moon in the shape of a bell (ghanta) on her forehead, which radiates divine brilliance. This unique form gives her the name “Chandraghanta.”

Her persona is a beautiful blend – gentle yet fierce, compassionate yet powerful. She is the Goddess of bravery, valor, and fearlessness. As the presiding deity of the Manipura Chakra, she frees devotees from sorrow, pain, and fear, while always remaining alert to protect them from evil.

Form and Symbolism

Maa Chandraghanta is depicted with ten arms, riding a lion – the symbol of courage and strength. She holds Trident, Mace, Sword, Lotus, Bow and Arrow, and a Kamandalu in her hands. One hand is in Varada Mudra (granting boons), and another in Abhaya Mudra (granting fearlessness). The crescent-shaped bell shines upon her forehead.
Her favorite color is yellow, symbolizing knowledge, joy, creativity, and spiritual awakening.

Legend and Significance

According to the Puranas, when Lord Shiva arrived for his marriage with a terrifying appearance – smeared in ashes, adorned with snakes, and accompanied by ghosts – people were terrified. To balance the situation, Maa Parvati assumed the divine form of Chandraghanta, radiating serenity and beauty. This calmed Lord Shiva, transforming the atmosphere, and the wedding rituals were completed gracefully.
Thus, she embodies the union of peace and power.
