Oil, Trade, and Double Standards: It’s Not About Policy—It’s About Power

A Perspective

When Donald Trump threatened India with increased tariffs on social media, it was typical Trumpism—loud, theatrical, and self-serving. But this time, the issue isn’t just about one man’s tantrum. The larger question is this: why is the West so rattled when India chooses a pragmatic path over political alignment? And more importantly—do they even have the moral standing to question it?

Oil Diplomacy or Global Bullying?

India’s crude oil imports from Russia are not an act of rebellion. They’re a matter of survival, driven by national interest, not international approval. After the Ukraine war began and traditional oil supply lines diverted toward Europe, it was the US itself that encouraged India to buy Russian oil to stabilize global energy markets.

Now, the same countries—particularly the US and the EU—are pointing fingers, conveniently forgetting that they are conducting far more extensive trade with Russia themselves. India is being told to be “ethical,” while others remain opportunistic behind closed doors.

West’s Trade Hypocrisy Laid Bare

Let’s look at the numbers:

  • The EU traded €67.5 billion in goods and €17.2 billion in services with Russia in recent years.
  • It imported 16.5 million tonnes of LNG from Russia in 2024, surpassing its 2022 record.
  • The US imports uranium, palladium, fertilizers, and chemicals from Russia—resources it needs for its nuclear and EV industries.

If this is acceptable, why is India’s oil diplomacy being scrutinized?

Opposition’s Opportunism: Questioning Without Offering Direction

Back home, opposition parties used the moment to attack the government—but their criticism felt more like political opportunism than informed dissent. They blamed the government for “failing self-reliance” and “bowing to global pressure,” without acknowledging the global double standards at play.

When national policy is shaped by pressing domestic needs and complex geopolitics, shallow one-liners only expose the lack of strategic vision in political opposition.

Should India Justify Every Step? No. It Should Ask Better Questions.

Why should India justify every global decision it takes in its own interest? Why are Western nations allowed realpolitik, but India is asked to act like a monk in the marketplace?

The reality is clear: India’s energy policy is grounded in logic, necessity, and sovereignty. And it is unapologetic—rightfully so.

India’s Stand: No to Pressure, Yes to Pragmatism

India is not beholden to the West. Its message is simple and direct:
“We welcome friendship, not subservience. We are open to cooperation, not conditional approval.”

Whether it’s oil or trade, India is no longer a passive player—it’s an assertive, balanced, and self-respecting voice in the global dialogue. It doesn’t echo anymore—it speaks, firmly and factually.
